Microsoft introduced the console world to the idea of a premium online service with Xbox Live. It launched all the way back on the original Xbox, and has been a core part of the Xbox ecosystem ever since. Features like voice chat and powerful servers for online multiplayer made it very popular. As a result of its success, Sony then introduced its own online service PlayStation Network during the PS3 era. Nintendo has followed suit with the Nintendo Network on Wii U, which is currently growing into the upcoming Nintendo Switch Online, due to release in 2018.
For Microsoft, Xbox Live is a very important product to have in it arsenal. The Head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, talked about how vital it is during an interview with TIME. Here’s what he had to say:
” Console is part of the opportunity in gaming that we see in Xbox. It is also not the whole opportunity… I see Xbox Live from a platform perspective as the most critical asset we have. Xbox Live is on iOS, it’s on Android, we talked about cross-play with Switch, and it’s obviously on PC and Xbox.”
